Stoves FAQ

I am hearing a lot about pellet stoves. Are they worth the investment?

The answer is yes:

Tax Savings. For starters, they do qualify for the Economic Stimulus Package Tax Credit if purchased by December 31, 2009.
  • Convenience. Pellet stoves are also convenient, and easy to use. With the push of a button, or a setting on your thermostat, the fire kicks in and warms your home.
  • Clean. Pellet stoves are clean burning, and good for the indoor air quality of your home, and your family. Pellet Stoves burn so clean that they are actually exempt from EPA emission testing.
  • Environmental Impact. Pellet stoves burn pellets that not only burn clean, but are made from the waste of other products (like sawdust). Basically, this material would not be used otherwise. They are rated the cleanest of all residential heating appliances that burn solid fuel.
  • Easy to Load. Pellets are small and light, resembling rabbit food. Unlike wood, they are very easy to scoop into the stove’s auger. Also, most pellet stoves only need to be refueled once a day.
  • Easy to Clean. Pellet stoves are very easy to clean. Once a week, you just empty the stove’s hopper.

Do you recommend wood stove inserts for existing fireplaces?

Yes. Master Chimney Sweepers does recommend the installation of wood stove inserts into fireplaces - if they are properly installed with a liner on the top.

We also recommend HEARTH STOVES. Hearth stove installations do accommodate accessible cleanings, because in every new installation we recommend the installation of a stainless steel liner throughout the entire flue. There will be a removable tee behind the stove, usually located in the fireplace. Through this tee you will be able to effectively clean the flue.

The design of the hearth stove also has a design that gives the user a more efficient draft and less creosote buildup. There is less creosote because the stove will be properly sized to the chimney flue opening. Hearth stoves also provide more heat to the room.

If you do insist on getting a wood stove insert, we suggest the installation of a 12"x12" cleanout door on the back wall of the fireplace to access the smoke chamber and flue. If your dining room is on the adjacent back this will become a problem and you should consult with one of our technicians.
