| Energy and Safety Concerns to Consider When Installing Gas Logs in a Fireplace |
Dampers and Caps
According to State laws and codes when you install gas logs in a fireplace the existing damper must be removed. This will insure the safe venting of carbon monoxide from the combusted products of the gas fireplace. When the damper is removed the homeowner will lose substantial amounts of energy from the room unless they install a glass doors for the fireplace. These enclosures are a must with every installation.
Chimney caps also need to be installed; otherwise animals such as birds, squirrels and raccoons will have free entry into your home. Gas stove installations on the other hand, come with both of these features automatically included.
The Importance of the Right Liner
Gas Stoves in fireplaces are much more energy efficient than the gas fireplace but require more care when installing. The key to a safe installation are as follows. First the chimney will require a liner to extend all the way to the top of the chimney with a proper chimney cap installed. The BTU capacity of the liner must match the BTU's of the gas stove they are exhausting.
We recommend the use of a Ventinox Stainless Steel Liner, they are strong, durable and will not rip or tear during installation. Rips or tears can create a dangerous carbon monoxide leak. This is why we strictly forbid the use of aluminum by any of our certified installers.
