Pellet Stoves

With skyrocketing oil prices, the cost of heating homes is jumping off the charts. The Department of Energy expects heating bills to be 27 percent higher this winter for people who heat with oil percent higher for those who heat with natural gas. In cold-winter climates, this number will be closer to 30 percent. What can you do?

Some homeowners are turning to pellet stoves to provide supplemental (or in some cases, primary) heat. Pellet stoves look similar to wood stoves or fireplace inserts, but the similarities end there. Inside, they are very sophisticated combustion appliances. We are the experts in chimney cleaning and repair, so we also know exactly what you should be considering when you are trying to decide on the best stove for your home.

Common Mistakes Made When Buying a Wood or Gas Stove Without Professional Consultation

1. Install Stoves in Fireplaces

This problem can be costly and dangerous. People often improperly size the stove's BTUs relative to the chimney flue or passageway flow capacity. In other words, they don't run a properly sized chimney liner all the way to the top of the chimney allowing for proper ventilation.

2. Don't Adhere to Proper NFPA codes and clearances

The most common violation we see, is an installation that is too close to combustables (see our quick tips for more here).

3. Mis-Judge the BTU's of the stove relative to the room they are trying to heat

This is a simple miscalculation that is an easy mistake for people to make. We often find simply getting this right is a little that goes a long way, and is something our consultants can completely take you through.
